Chapter 13

Zhe laid out the bones from his collection onto a wide platform that was the sarcophagus of a tomb, within the necropolis. There were the bones of Finnlord and those of the gray bear. In addition, he now had the shell of the demon and the hollowed legs of the snow spider.

The necropolis was once again silent and still, with the destruction of the demon. Nothing stirred, as there wasn’t even food for rats in this field of bones.

Raquel was still in shock from the intense experience of sadness that the demon had amplified in her heart. She no longer wept, but she was still unable to speak. She had at least regained enough control of herself to cast a healing spell and apply salves to Zhe’s wounds.

Zhe had been unaffected by the demon’s use of his sadness against him, beyond the initial instant. His life had seen such sorrows that a mere demon didn’t have much to add to it. Zhe also had the skills and experience of death and magic; of being a Bone Mage and experienced warrior.

He set out the ingredients necessary for the bone bath and the tools for crafting a suit of armor from the bones of his dead enemies. Then he organized the bones according to more or less how he would use them.

Nearby was a dried fountain filled with dust. Zhe used his now empty bag to sweep the basin of the fountain as best he could.

As he did so, Raquel joined him and began helping. Zhe glanced at her, wondering if he should try to speak or just let her be in the moment with him.

He decided to say nothing, and they focused on cleaning the fountain. Once the basin was mostly cleared of debris and dust, Zhe poured water into it and scrubbed it to wash it out.

Who knew what had fallen into the basin over the centuries. Any pollution would be detrimental to what he needed to do.

With the basin cleaned, Zhe stuffed some waxed fabric from his bag into the drain so that the water wouldn’t escape.

Nearby was a fountain that was somehow still functioning, after centuries. The builders had tapped into a mountain spring that remained active and had the pressure to flow through the channels in the fountain. Only the drain was partially blocked, causing the basin to overflow onto the ground.

Zhe used the Bone Mage helmet that he found in the bear cave to transport water from the functioning fountain to the one he’d cleaned and plugged. One helmet at a time, he filled the large basin. It was going to take hours at least, given the size of the basin and the size of the helmet.

Remembering that he had the spider legs, Zhe got an idea and connected them to one another, forming a long tube.

With the help of Raquel, Zhe positioned the hollow spider legs where the water entered the working fountain. The water passed down the tube and came out the other end.
